MERISOL is the joint venture in cresylic acids production formed in late 1997 by Merichem Company and Sasol Chemical Industries. The joint venture brings together the complementary strengths of the two partners, Sasol, through cresylic acid co-products from coal based synthetic fuels operations, and Merichem, through their innovative production of high quality cresylic acids and high purity cresols.

The joint venture partners formed Merisol Antioxidants LLC in late 1997 to acquire and operate the BHT plant at Oil City, PA, the oldest and largest capacity BHT plant in North America. Through its link with the MERISOL joint venture, the Oil City plant has the advantage of a supply chain fully integrated from the coalmine, through cresols feedstock to BHT production.
